# 24/7 Letter Template for Escalation List Counselors

> A customizable letter that schools can send to Escalation List members about their role in receiving and responding to Beacon 24/7 Active Planning escalations.

GoGuardian Beacon provides a sample letter that schools and districts can customize and send to staff who have been added to the Beacon 24/7 Escalation List. This letter orients those users to their specific role in receiving phone calls from GoGuardian's Safety Support team when an Active Planning alert is escalated.

<Note>
  Remove all instructional text before sending this letter. Replace all bracketed placeholder text — such as `[insert name of school/district]` — with your school or district's information. This template is provided for informational purposes only. GoGuardian does not warrant that it satisfies any applicable federal, state, or district requirement. Your school or district remains solely responsible for ensuring all communications with staff comply with applicable laws, standards, and policies. Contact [goguardianbeacon@goguardian.com](mailto:goguardianbeacon@goguardian.com) with questions about how to use this template.

<Card title="Letter Template">
  Dear \[insert name],

  This school year, \[insert name of school/district] has adopted GoGuardian Beacon 24/7 services as part of our school's broader suicide prevention program. You are receiving this letter because you have been added as a counselor on the Escalation List for the Beacon 24/7 program. This means you may receive phone calls from GoGuardian's Safety Support team when an escalated alert requires immediate action.

  **What is GoGuardian Beacon?**

  GoGuardian Beacon helps notify \[insert name of school/district]'s counselors and other school support staff if the system detects that a student searches, creates, views, or interacts with online content that could be related to suicide or self-harm. Because of this, GoGuardian Beacon helps \[insert name of school/district] identify and intervene when a student may be at risk of suicide or self-harm.

  GoGuardian Beacon was designed in consultation with mental health experts, including the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (a nationally recognized not-for-profit organization dedicated to suicide prevention) and the American Association of Suicidology.

  It is important to know that neither \[insert name of school/district] nor GoGuardian Beacon can detect every situation when a student is suicidal.

  **What to expect**

  As a member of the Escalation List, you can expect to receive phone calls from GoGuardian's Safety Support Specialists. Safety Support Specialists review Active Planning alerts to verify the need to escalate to school staff for a student's safety.

  On the phone call with a Safety Support Specialist, you will be asked to confirm responsibility for the alert, review the alert on your Beacon Alerts page, and mark any actions taken.

  **Save the Beacon 24/7 number to your contacts.**

  Save the Beacon 24/7 phone number — **(855) 921-2124** — to your contacts as "Beacon 24/7 Escalation." This number is for outbound calls only and does not accept incoming calls.

  **Why are alerts being generated?**

  Escalated Active Planning alerts are student-triggered events that the GoGuardian Safety Support team has reviewed and determined require urgent and immediate action. Review these alerts in GoGuardian Beacon and take action as soon as possible.

  **What are all of the alert phases?**

  **Active Planning** — Online behavior and content that may demonstrate the student is actively planning their suicide, such as looking up methodologies or composing suicide notes.

  **Suicide Ideation** — Online behavior and content that could indicate that a student is forming or expressing thoughts about suicide, including thoughts about their own suicide.

  **Self Harm** — Online behavior and content that may demonstrate a student's desire to harm themselves without intent to end their life.

  **Help & Support** — Online behavior and content that may demonstrate the student is seeking help and support resources for themselves or a peer, such as hotline numbers, American Foundation for Suicide Prevention documents, or support forums.

  **Suicide Research** — Online behavior and content that may demonstrate the student is looking up statistics and information about suicide, as one might for a class assignment rather than exhibiting signs of Suicide Ideation.

  **What will a Beacon 24/7 alert look like?**

  Beacon 24/7 alerts include a status bar showing the Safety Support team's review progress. The four stages are:

  1. **Review Alert** — The alert has been reviewed or is currently under review by the Safety Support team.
  2. **Decision** — The Safety Support team has verified or is currently verifying whether the alert relates to the Active Planning phase.
  3. **Action** — If the Safety Support team determines the alert requires immediate attention, the escalation protocol will be initiated. Alerts re-categorized to a different phase will display "No Escalation."
  4. **Completion** — The Safety Support team's review is complete. A result badge indicates whether a contact was successfully reached, contact attempts were unsuccessful, or the alert was re-categorized to a more appropriate phase.

  On the Beacon Alerts page, Beacon 24/7 alerts that need immediate review will display a green, blue, or red notification box below the alert card.

  **How do I take action on an alert?**

  There are two options for reviewing alerts:

  **Option 1** — Toggle any actions taken related to this alert, including an in-person conversation, guardian contact, or response protocol initiation.

  **Option 2** — Select a risk level for this specific alert.

  **Note:** Beacon users must toggle all applicable actions taken in order to properly resolve the alert. Toggling actions taken also removes the blue outline around the alert card.

  It is important to review the Beacon Help Center resources for more information about Beacon 24/7 and your role in managing escalated alerts. Let us know if you have any questions.

  Warmly,
