# Best Practices: Beacon 24/7

> Recommendations for building an effective Escalation List, selecting a Last Responder, and ensuring staff are reachable when a Beacon 24/7 alert is escalated.

The following practices help ensure your school is prepared to respond to escalated Beacon 24/7 alerts.

## Build Escalation List with Care

Staff on the Escalation List have access to sensitive alert information. Select people who:

* Are trained in your school's Suicide Prevention Plan and confident in executing it
* Are willing and able to take action at any hour, including outside of school hours
* Hold Super Counselor or Counselor user privileges in Beacon
* Are registered in Org Management with names and email addresses that match exactly

Include at least two staff members on schedule at all times, plus a designated Last Responder. Teachers and IT administrators are typically not included unless they have specific mental health training.

If a staff member is also a parent or guardian of a student enrolled at your school, consult your school's policies before adding them to the Escalation List.

## Choose Last Responder Carefully

The Last Responder is contacted only if the Safety Support team cannot reach anyone else on the Escalation List. This person must:

* Be available and reachable at any time, day or night
* Keep their phone close at all times
* Be prepared to take immediate action upon receiving a call

## Plan for Missed Calls

If an Escalation List member misses a call:

* Check the **Alerts** page in Beacon immediately. The page shows the current escalation status and any actions already taken.
* Review the initial notification email. It includes the full Escalation List with each member's email address and phone number.
* Contact another staff member on the Escalation List who can access Beacon and take action.

## Avoid General Office Numbers

Escalation calls happen outside of school hours. Ensure each Escalation List member provides a direct personal phone number, not a shared office line. Confirm that the number matches what is listed for them in Org Management.

## Save Beacon 24/7 Number to Your Contacts

Save **(855) 921-2124** to your contacts as **Beacon 24/7 Escalation**. This number is used for outbound calls only. It does not accept incoming calls.

Encourage all Escalation List members to do the same.

## Bypass Do Not Disturb on Mobile Devices

To ensure escalation calls come through when Do Not Disturb is active, follow the steps below for each device type.

### iPhone

1. Open the **Contacts** app and find the Beacon 24/7 Escalation contact.

2. Tap **Edit** in the upper right corner of the contact card.

3. Scroll down and tap **Ringtone**.

4. Toggle **Emergency Bypass** to on. This allows calls from this contact to bypass Do Not Disturb.

5. (Optional) Choose a different ringtone for this contact.

6. Tap **Done**.

### Android

These steps apply to Android 10. Steps may vary by device or Android version.

1. Open your phone's **Settings** app.

2. Tap **Sound**, then tap **Do Not Disturb**.

3. Under **Exceptions**, scroll to **Calls** and tap **Allow Calls**.

4. Select the appropriate option: anyone, contacts only, or starred contacts only.

5. Turn on **Allow repeat callers** to let a call through if the same number calls twice within 15 minutes.
