# Best Practices: Beacon Rollout

> Recommended practices for setting up GoGuardian Beacon, selecting users, configuring access levels, and preparing staff before going live.

A successful Beacon rollout depends on careful user selection, appropriate access configuration, and thorough staff preparation before the system goes live. The following practices reduce risk and support an effective response when alerts are generated.

## Be Selective About Which Users Receive Access

When adding someone to GoGuardian Beacon, confirm that all users are prepared to receive information about student suicide and self-harm. Consult your school's suicide prevention policy to determine which staff members should have access to your Beacon deployments. In most cases, mental health staff — such as school psychologists, counselors, and administrators — will have access to Beacon. Teachers typically do not receive access to this sensitive information.

## Be Thoughtful About the 24/7 Escalation List

For schools with Beacon 24/7: Be deliberate about who is added to the Escalation List. Safety Support Specialists call these individuals when an Active Planning alert is escalated. Members of the Escalation List should be part of the school's suicide prevention protocol and policy team.

If third-party individuals — such as crisis centers or school resource officers — are contracted for student mental health services, ensure those contracts meet your school or district's privacy standards (including but not limited to FERPA), that those individuals have received appropriate training on your district's approach to discipline and multi-tiered systems of support, and that they have the correct access levels in Beacon.

Running practice drills or hypothetical scenarios as part of staff training helps ensure all Escalation List members are prepared to receive an incoming Safety Support Specialist call.

## Configure Access Levels Appropriately

Super Counselor permissions are for school officials with the authority to make decisions about Beacon settings related to suicide and self-harm. Super Counselors can edit settings within their deployments. Review the [User Roles and Permissions](/products/beacon/user-roles-and-permissions) article to understand each access level before assigning users.

## Ensure All Users Understand Your Crisis Protocol

All Beacon users should be trained on suicide prevention in general, your school's suicide prevention and emergency protocols, and the specific actions each user is expected to take when a Beacon notification is received. Consistent training across all users supports a coordinated and timely response.

## Keep Settings and User Roles Current

Staff roles and responsibilities change over time. Disable users when they leave or change roles, and update access levels as appropriate. Review your active Beacon users at the start of each school year and after any staff transition.

## Start with the Most Actionable Alert Phases

As schools learn to incorporate Beacon into their suicide prevention protocols, starting with only the **Active Planning** and **Suicide Ideation** phases helps ensure that responders are prepared to act on the information that surfaces. Once your team is familiar with the system, you can decide whether to enable additional phases or Threats and Violence categories. Instructions for adjusting which phases and categories Beacon surfaces are available in [Alert Preferences](/products/beacon/alert-preferences).
