# The GoGuardian App on Windows

> How The GoGuardian App differs from the Windows Legacy deployment: advantages of the new app, UX changes in Teacher features, and unsupported features.

The GoGuardian App replaces the Windows Legacy deployment (GoGuardian Extensions + MSI package) for Windows devices. All major GoGuardian Teacher features are supported, with a few UX differences and unsupported features described in this article.

## Review Windows Deployment Advantages

The GoGuardian App on Windows offers several improvements over the Windows Legacy deployment:

* **Faster, more simplified deployment** — the app installs through your MDM without requiring separate extension and MSI package management
* **Improved security and performance** — local traffic proxying with SSL decryption provides more reliable filtering than the extension-based approach
* **Web browser agnostic** — filtering applies across all browsers, not only Chrome

## Check Modified Teacher Features

The following GoGuardian Teacher features work differently in The GoGuardian App compared to the Windows Legacy version.

### Understand Close Tab Behavior

On The GoGuardian App, closing a student's browser tab keeps the tab open but replaces its contents with a page that reads "Your teacher closed this website."

Native Windows applications can still be fully closed using the **Close App** command.

### Review Teacher Chat Placement

The Teacher Chat interface is a dedicated tab inside The GoGuardian App window. In Windows Legacy, Teacher Chat opened in a standalone pop-up window.

### Check Announcements Delivery

The Announcements feature lets teachers send messages to individual students or the entire class. In Windows Legacy, announcements appeared as a pop-up modal inside all open browser tabs. In The GoGuardian App, announcements appear in a standalone pop-up window outside the browser.

### Review Check-In Placement

The Check-Ins feature lets teachers send a class-wide prompt to see how students are feeling. In Windows Legacy, the Check-In survey appeared in a standalone pop-up window. In The GoGuardian App, Check-Ins are displayed in the **Home** tab of the app window.

### Know Scene Tab Limit Behavior

GoGuardian Teacher Scenes can auto-open websites when a Scene is applied and limit the number of tabs a student can have open. In The GoGuardian App, when a student reaches the tab limit, additional tabs redirect to the "Your teacher closed this website" page rather than closing. Auto-open behavior remains the same.

## Understand Hostname Exception Behavior

Hostname and application exceptions configured in Org Management prevent GoGuardian from filtering web traffic to specific domains. When a domain is excluded, GoGuardian Teacher's Student Activity view does not display student activity from that domain.

To add or manage exceptions, go to **Org Management** and select **Installations**, then choose **Manage Exceptions**.

See [Add Exceptions in Organization Management](/products/org-management/add-exceptions) for detailed instructions.
