# Sync Organizational Units via Clever

> Use Clever as the OU source for nightly syncs in GoGuardian, when to choose it, and how Clever's school and grade-level structure maps to OUs.

GoGuardian supports organizational unit (OU) synchronization through Clever. OUs synced from Clever depend on the schools and grade levels shared with GoGuardian through Clever's sharing rules. To get started, complete the [Clever integration](/products/org-management/clever-classlink-sync) first. Once Clever is linked, it can serve as the source for nightly OU syncs.

  Teacher accounts are not imported as OUs through Clever. If you use GoGuardian Admin to filter teacher accounts, all teacher accounts receive the filtering policy applied at the root (top) level of the domain.

## Decide When to Use Clever for OU Sync

GoGuardian can sync OUs from Clever, Google Admin Console, or Active Directory. Choose Clever when you prefer to sync OUs based on Clever's data structure (district → school → grade level) rather than the more flexible structures in Google Admin Console. The key distinction is that teachers are excluded from the OU data received from Clever.

  Only one OU provider can be used with GoGuardian at a time. Enabling Active Directory OU sync disables Google Admin Console or Clever OUs.

## Understand How Clever OU Sync Works

Clever OU sync is based on the schools and grade levels students are categorized into within Clever. A typical Clever OU structure looks like this:

* **GoGuardian Elementary:** Grade 1, Grade 2, Grade 3, Grade 4, Grade 5
* **GoGuardian Middle School:** Grade 6, Grade 7, Grade 8
* **GoGuardian High School:** grade-level OUs for each high school grade
