# Enable Immersive Reader

> Enable Microsoft Immersive Reader so students can access text-to-speech, translation, and reading tools during assessments

Immersive Reader is a Microsoft service that gives students access to literacy and language tools during a Pear Assessment test. When you enable the feature, students see an Immersive Reader button on every slide or item with readable text. They can use it to have text read aloud, translate content into another language, adjust text size and spacing, highlight parts of speech, and break words into syllables: without leaving the assessment.

All Pear Assessment users can enable Immersive Reader, regardless of subscription plan.

## Enable Immersive Reader in Your Settings

1. Go to [Pear Assessment Settings](https://app.peardeck.com/home/settings) (Pear Assessment Home > My Account > Settings).
2. Locate the **Immersive Reader** setting.
3. Toggle the setting **on**.

This setting applies to all future sessions until you turn it off.

## How Students Access Immersive Reader

Once you enable the feature and students join a session, the Immersive Reader button appears automatically on every item that contains readable text.

Students click the button to open the Immersive Reader panel. Available tools include:

* Text read aloud
* Translation into multiple languages
* Syllable breakdown
* Line and letter spacing adjustments
* Parts-of-speech highlighting
* Text size controls

Students click the back arrow at the top left to return to the standard item view.

## Frequently Asked Questions

### What Content Does Immersive Reader Render?

Immersive Reader renders text typed directly into a slide or question item. It cannot render text embedded in images or text added through multiple-choice option fields in the sidebar. To make that content available in Immersive Reader, type the text into a text box on the item instead.

### Does Immersive Reader Work in Student-Paced Mode?

Yes. The feature is available in both teacher-led and student-paced sessions.

### Can Students Use a Keyboard to Open Immersive Reader?

No. Students must use a mouse, touchpad, or touch screen to activate the Immersive Reader icon.
