The article provides FAQs regarding Common Assessments in the Pear Assessment community. The article also provides additional resources for further reading on Common Assessments, test assigning, redirects, tags, and collaboration groups.

## FAQ: Common Assessment

Here are some frequently asked questions about Common Assessments asked by users in the Pear Assessment community.

## FAQ

### Which Test Type Should I Use for Benchmarks?

Common Assessment is the best choice for benchmarks because it's summative. This designation separates assessments from Class or Practice Assessments, which are formative quizzes.

### Does the Assessment Need to Be Marked Common Assessment to Provide Comparative Results?

No. Users receive comparative results when the same assessment is taken in a district or school regardless of test type.

### Can Teachers Create Benchmarks?

Teachers can create benchmark exams, but it makes the test less secure. Teachers will create benchmarks like everyday assessments, but they need to share them with the administrator, who assigns and sets the test type to Common Assessment. If the teachers need to assign it, an admin must be added as a co-author as only the admin can designate the test type as Common Assessment.

### Can Teachers Assign Benchmarks?

Yes, teachers can assign benchmarks to specific students, but admins can only assign them to classes. The admin can only assign the benchmark because test or test settings may need accommodation.

Tip: If the district or school uses the same test for all students, the District Admin is the best user to assign the test because it secures the test. For more information on whether the admin or teacher should assign, please read Common Assessment: Teacher vs Admin Assigning.

### If Users Share the Benchmark with the Teachers to Assign, Should They Clone/Duplicate the Test Before Assigning It?

No, cloning creates multiple test versions and generates additional data. Tests should only be cloned when there are changes to the questions like adding, removing, or editing them. It's recommended that the clone and question changes are completed before sharing the test to avoid every teacher creating a clone for accommodations.

Tip: Please do not clone an assessment if only accommodating test settings (e.g., shuffle questions, timed test, etc.).

### What Options Do I Have to Secure My Benchmark?

Your first option would be to have their own District Custom Collections (for Enterprise Users). This is only needed if District Admins plan to have teachers assign the assessment or if users want coaches/admins to share and assign assessments without letting teachers see them.

The next option is Freeze Settings. This can be found in the **Settings** tab when creating the assessment. This option lets the test's author choose the settings teachers need to use for teacher-assigned benchmarks. Teachers cannot adjust these settings before, during, or after the test.

The third option is admin-assigned benchmarks. When assigning the test, you can hide the content from teachers in the **Test Behavior** tab, preventing them from seeing the test before the class submits it. The next tab, **Anti-Cheating**, can set student-facing security.

### The Test Has Been Assigned, but I Need to Reopen It for Some Students. How Do I Do That?

Redirect reopens the test for retakes, absent students, accidental submissions, and skipped questions. Redirects can be completed by teachers or admins.

### What Are the Best Practices for Organizing Benchmarks to Look at Data?

After setting the Test Type as Common Assessment, we recommend you apply tags to tests. Tags allow you to filter to a specific group of assessments. For example, you might want to see only Q2 benchmarks or Algebra benchmarks. You could also tag assessments to benchmark and not tag the pre-assessment to filter them out.

### Do the Teachers Also Receive Comparative Results on Benchmarks?

Admins are only able to see comparative results and can manually provide access for specific assessments using Collaboration Groups.
