# Open Assigned Assessments by Grade

> Open an assigned assessment for selected grades in mixed-grade classes while keeping results in the same class-level reports.

Use grade-based access in Pear Assessment to open an assigned assessment for specific grade levels within a mixed-grade class. Teachers, school administrators, and district administrators can give different grades access at different times without creating separate assignments, while keeping results together in the class-level reports.

## Before You Begin

* **Check your role.** Grade-based access is available to district administrators, school administrators, and teachers.
* **Confirm availability.** This feature must be enabled for your district. If you do not see the options described below, contact your Pear Assessment representative.
* **Review student grade levels.** Access is based on each student’s grade level in the roster, not the grade assigned to the class. Make sure student grade levels are correct before opening the assessment.

## Open an Assessment for Selected Grades Across Multiple Classes

For district and school administrators:

1. Go to the **Assignments** list.
2. Click the assignment you want to update.
3. Select the classes you want to update.
4. Click **Open** at the top of the class list.
5. Select **Open for Selected Grades**.
6. Choose the grade levels that should have access from the grade menu.

7. Click **Open Assignment**.

The assignment status updates to show which grades have access. For example, **In Progress (Grade 2)** indicates that the assignment is open for Grade 2.

## Set Grade-Based Access for 1 Class

1. Go to **Assignments** and locate the assigned assessment.
2. Find the class you want to update, then click **Open**.
3. Select **Open for Selected Grades** and choose the grade levels that should have access.
4. Click **Open Assignment**.

Students in the selected grades can now access and start the assessment.

### Give Additional Grades Access Later

Repeat the steps for the class and select the additional grade levels. Pear Assessment adds those grades to the existing access list without creating a new assignment.

> [!NOTE]
>
> Adding grades does not remove access for grades you opened previously.

## Review Limitations and Considerations

### Keep Previously Opened Grades in Mind

Once a grade has access, you cannot revoke access for that grade alone.

> [!WARNING]
>
> The standard **Pause** and **Close** controls affect the entire class, not just 1 grade. Consider the impact on all students in the class before using these controls.

### Understand How Roster Changes Affect Access

Changing a student’s grade level in the roster does not retroactively change their access to an assessment that has already been assigned.

### Check Auto-Assigned Assessments Separately

Auto-assigned assessments default to **Open for All Students** unless an administrator manually changes access after the assignment is created.

### View Results in 1 Class Report

Students can take the assessment at different times based on their grade, but their scores remain together in the class-level reports.

## Confirm Grade-Based Access Is Enabled

If you do not see **Open for Selected Grades**, contact your Pear Assessment representative to confirm that grade-based access is enabled for your district.
