# Create a Classification Question

> Add a classification question to a practice set to help students sort items into categories.

Classification questions ask students to sort items into two or more named groups. Use this question type in a practice set when you want students to demonstrate understanding of categories, properties, or relationships.

## Before You Begin

Confirm that you have a practice set open and ready to edit. If you need to create a new practice set first, see [Create a Practice Set](/products/pear-practice/create-a-practice-set).

## Add a Classification Question

1. Open the practice set you want to edit.
2. Click **Add Question**.
3. Select **Classification** from the question type list.
4. In the **Question** field, enter the prompt students will see.
5. Under **Categories**, enter a name for each group. Click **Add Category** to include more groups.
6. Under **Items**, enter each item students will sort. Assign each item to the correct category using the dropdown next to it.
7. (Optional) Click **Add Hint** to provide a hint students can reveal during practice.
8. Click **Save** to add the question to the practice set.

## Verify the Question

After saving, preview the practice set to confirm the classification question appears correctly and all items are assigned to the right categories.

1. Click **Preview** in the practice set editor.
2. Interact with the classification question as a student would.
3. Return to the editor and make any corrections needed.
