# Template Letter for Parents and Guardians About GoGuardian Admin and Teacher
> A customizable template letter for schools and districts to notify parents and guardians about their use of GoGuardian Admin, GoGuardian Teacher, or both.
GoGuardian provides this sample letter as a starting point for schools and districts that want to notify parents and guardians about their use of GoGuardian Admin, GoGuardian Teacher, or both. Tailor the letter to describe only the products your school has adopted and the settings your administration has selected.
Remove all instructional text before sending this letter to parents and guardians. Replace every bracketed placeholder — such as `[insert school/district name]` — with your school's or district's information.
Tailor this letter to meet your school's or district's legal and policy requirements, such as requiring parents and guardians to sign a consent form for GoGuardian's use in the classroom, and to describe the filtering and review settings your administration has selected. **How are we using GoGuardian?**

* Help protect students against harmful and inappropriate online material
* Help students stay more focused when learning online
* Help assess students' progress toward class assignments \[if your school has GoGuardian Teacher]
* Facilitate communication between teachers and students during class time \[if your school has GoGuardian Teacher]
**When and how does GoGuardian operate?**
GoGuardian's web-based services operate when a student is signed in to their school-managed account on a supported device (for example, when a student is logged into their school email address). \[insert school/district name] uses GoGuardian on \[insert device types, such as Chromebooks, iPads, MacBooks, or Windows devices].
**Note to schools regarding GoGuardian Admin:** Your school or district can share information about your GoGuardian Admin settings with parents and guardians, such as when Admin is active or whether your school uses the school session indicator. A school session indicator (school house icon) appears in the student's browser when GoGuardian is active, to help students understand when GoGuardian is 'on.'"
**Note to schools regarding GoGuardian Teacher:** Your school or district can share information about your GoGuardian Teacher settings with parents and guardians, such as limitations on when GoGuardian Teacher operates. If you share your settings through this letter or otherwise, describe them accurately and update parents and guardians if you change the settings during the school year. **What are the school's responsibilities?**
\[insert school/district name] selected GoGuardian services to help our students stay safer and more focused online. \["We will work with students during class time to help teach them digital responsibility and safety. Additionally, we will train teachers on how to operate GoGuardian and on our policies and procedures to help protect student privacy."]
**What are my responsibilities as a parent or guardian, and my child's responsibilities?**
We ask that students use their school-managed accounts and devices for educational purposes within the boundaries of \[insert school/district name]'s \[insert names of relevant school policies, such as the school's technology acceptable use agreement].
When a student is off campus, parents are responsible for supervising internet access and usage. We encourage you to discuss rules for appropriate internet use with your child and reinforce lessons of digital citizenship and safety.
**What are my choices as a parent or guardian?**
**Note to schools:** Your school or district may add language about the choices parents have regarding the use of GoGuardian Admin or GoGuardian Teacher in connection with their child, including any opt-out or Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) rights. Consult your school's or district's legal or policy team for this decision.
**How does GoGuardian help protect my child's privacy?**
To help your child remain focused and safe online, GoGuardian collects certain personally identifiable information about your child. GoGuardian has consulted with privacy experts, participates in privacy organizations, is a signatory of the [Student Privacy Pledge](https://studentprivacypledge.org/privacy-pledge/), and has been awarded certifications by [iKeepSafe](https://ikeepsafe.org/products/) for complying with the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act and California student privacy laws, which have served as a model for many other states' student privacy laws.
