# Use Teacher Chat

> Enable Teacher Chat, send messages to individual students, broadcast class-wide announcements, and review chat history.

GoGuardian Teacher Chat enables 1-on-1 text communication between teachers and students during a class session. Chat is a practical way to help keep students on track and answer questions, especially for students who may be reluctant to raise their hand.

Teachers and students can both initiate chat. Students can only chat with their teacher — not with other students.

<Note>
  Scheduled sessions require Chat to be turned on manually each class. The Chat setting does not carry over from session to session automatically for scheduled classes.
</Note>

## Enable Chat

1. On the class tile on your GoGuardian Teacher dashboard, set the **Start class with Chat** toggle to **On** before clicking **Start Class**.

2. To change the Chat setting during an active session, go to the class Screens view and click the **Chat** toggle to turn it on or off. You can change this setting at any time during the session.

3. Click the chat bubble icon near the bottom corner of the page to open the Chat sidebar.

4. In the Chat sidebar, go to the **Conversations** section and select a student to open the chat interface with that student.

5. Confirm that the student appears in your Conversations list and that the chat input field is available.

<Tip>
  Students open chat by clicking the GoGuardian icon in the taskbar at the bottom of their screen.

## Send a Class Announcement

The **Announcement** feature lets you broadcast a message to all — or individual — students in your class at once. For details on using Announcements, refer to the Using Announcements article.

## Review Chat History

Chat history between teachers and students is saved in 2 places.

**In the Sessions page:**
Click on any class tile to open the **Sessions** page. Find the session you want to review in the **Chat Log** column and click **View** to open the chat logs for that session.

**In Student Reports:**
Go to the **Student Reports** tab. Select a classroom, a student name, and a date range, then choose **View** or **Email** the report. For viewed reports, chat logs appear in the **Chat History** tab. Emailed reports are delivered as a PDF that includes browsing activity, teacher commands, screenshots, and a Chat History section.

<Note>
  GoGuardian Super Users have access to all historical chat logs between teachers and students in the Chat Logs section of Org Management at [manage.goguardian.com/chat-logs](https://manage.goguardian.com/chat-logs).
