Run Rapid Rounds with Quick Play

Quick Play is a short session that empowers teachers to engage students with rapid rounds and rewards. It has four keys: Base Points, Bonus Points, Streaks, and Care Packages. Base Points are worth up to 100 points, and Bonus Points are an additional 100 points when a team achieves a Streak of three questions answered correctly in a row. Each team member must answer the questions correctly to start or continue a Streak. Mid-game, Care Package rounds are inserted at random to reward students for their hard work. Quick Play is a short practice session that engages students with rapid rounds and rewards. It can reduce practice time by up to a third compared to The Big Board.

Start Quick Play

You can start Quick Play by navigating to My Library > click on a Practice Set > Start Live Practice. A menu appears from the side of the screen, where you can click Quick Play, see approximately how long it’ll take to play, and configure the session settings like The Big Board. The settings include:
  • Select a Classroom
  • Allow Guest Students
  • Time Per Question (30 seconds to 5 minutes, or no time limit)
  • Randomize Question Order
  • Skip Selected Questions
When ready, click Start Live Practice.

Share Join Code with Students

At the start of the Quick Play, invite your students to the session by clicking Copy Join Link. It’ll automatically copy the URL, which you can share with students by pasting it into your preferred communication channel. If you’ve already started the session and want to invite a student, copy the join link at the top of the page. Also, students can join the session by logging into their Pear Practice account and clicking the Join Class banner below the navigation bar. As the students join the session, the counter changes to show the number of students participating as well as the students’ avatars populate. You can review who’s joined by clicking Show Students.

Shuffle Student Teams

Students are grouped into teams like when playing The Big Board. You can change their teams by clicking Shuffle Teams, or start the session with Let’s Play. On the student screens, their avatar stands next to their teammates in a single file line in the direction of their team name. They can change their team name by clicking Shuffle Team Name.

Review Session Structure

Quick Play has four keys:
  • Base Points
  • Bonus Points
  • Streaks
  • Care Packages
Base Points are the number of points a team can earn based on how many team members answer a question correctly. For example, if a team has three members and one of them answers correctly, they earn 33 Base Points. If all three members answer correctly, the team earns 100 Base Points and starts a Streak. Streaks encourage students to collaborate because the team earns 100 Bonus Points when each team member correctly answers three questions in a row. The 100 Bonus Points are added to the 100 Base Points, totaling 200 points. Students also see a flame in the header on their screen that they can hover to check the length of their streak. The flame is either colorless (no streak yet) or lit (streak started), and resets after a streak of three correct answers. In addition to the potential points, teams can unlock rare and unique Items during a Care Package round. The round occurs randomly during Quick Play and awards each team member a package if the team answers the question correctly.

Follow Teams’ Progress

You can track teams’ progress during the session on the left-hand side of the question. The team avatars display ellipsis when working and checkmarks when completed. Pro-tip: If your teams need more time, hover the session clock and click + 30s to add 30 seconds to the question.

Review the Question with the Class

After the class completes questions, the Review screen displays their responses, which you can review with them. On the students’ screens, they see their responses with a checkmark or an X next to them. Incorrect responses also show the correct ones. If the students answered the questions correctly, their flame is lit. They can hover the flame to see how long their streak is. Ask the teams how long their streak is to increase engagement and raise the stakes.
