Frequently Asked Questions

Can a teacher call just a few students, or does it have to be the whole class? Either. When setting up a call, the teacher selects individual students, a group, or the whole class. Can district admins control camera access by OU? Currently, camera permission controls apply to the entire organization, not by individual OU. Can a teacher turn on student webcams or microphones? No. When a student receives a call invitation, they are prompted to accept and choose whether to enable their camera and microphone. Teachers cannot enable student cameras or microphones remotely. Will students be able to see each other during a group video call? Yes. Students in a group video call see the other students and the teacher. Teachers can hover over individual students to mute them, disable their webcams, or view their browsing activity. Students do not have access to the Teacher dashboard view. Can student photos be shown instead of initials for audio-only participants? GoGuardian Teacher does not currently integrate with services that have access to student photos, and there are no plans to support uploading photos. Can a student be added to a group call after it has started? A teacher cannot add students after a call has started. If a student declines the initial call invitation or leaves early, they will see an option to rejoin in their chat area as long as the call is still active. Does audio or video remain enabled after the call ends? No. Audio and video are disabled as soon as a teacher ends the call or a student leaves. Does recording include student video and audio? Before recording begins, all student participants are shown a consent form. Students who decline can still join and listen, but their webcam and microphone are disabled for the call. Do calls or presentations appear in Timeline view? If a student views the conferencing page, it appears in their timeline for the duration of time they were on that page. Can teachers record Lecture/Presentation mode? Yes, if the organization’s subscription includes video conferencing and a Super User has enabled recording in the organization settings. What happens to open tabs when a teacher locks students to a presentation? Open tabs are minimized and inaccessible to the student while the presentation is locked. When the presentation ends, the tabs reappear. Can a student close the presentation tab? No. Students cannot close the presentation tab. Only the teacher can end the presentation. What if 2 teachers are presenting to the same student at the same time? The student sees a bar at the top of their screen saying “Another teacher is presenting. Click here to see what they’re presenting.” The student can switch between presentations. If one teacher stops presenting, the student is redirected to the remaining active presentation within 10 seconds. How much bandwidth does screen sharing use? Teachers sharing their screen use up to 3 Mbps depending on settings. Students receiving the presentation use approximately 2.5 Mbps. Can teachers see or hear students during Lecture/Presentation mode? Only if the organization also has the video conferencing feature. On its own, Lecture/Presentation mode enables teachers to share their screen, video, and audio with students. It does not enable the cameras or microphones on student devices. If your organization does not have video conferencing, use Teacher Chat for student communication. Can students share their screen? No. Lecture/Presentation mode only lets teachers share their screen with students. As a workaround, a teacher can start a video call with an individual student, then maximize that student’s screen in the Screens view, though this does not live stream to the whole class. Can a teacher present to only a few students? Yes. When starting a presentation, the teacher can present to the whole class or select one or more students. Can a teacher change what they present during a presentation? Teachers cannot change presentation settings mid-presentation. To switch from sharing screen, audio, and video to sharing only screen and audio, the teacher must end the current presentation and start a new one. The teacher can still switch between tabs or windows within the shared content.
