Subject-level Text-to-Speech (TTS) lets you choose the subjects in which a student can use TTS. For example, a student can use TTS on Mathematics tests without receiving it on ELA tests. Districts can provide these settings through their rostering source or configure them manually in Pear Assessment.

Review Requirements

  • Subject-level TTS is off by default. To turn it on for your district, contact Pear Assessment Support.
  • The feature requires an active district-level Enterprise subscription.
  • The student’s TTS accommodation must be on. Selecting subjects does not turn on TTS by itself.
  • To apply each student’s subject-specific accommodation, set the assignment’s TTS option to Enable at Student level. Assignment-level and class-level overrides continue to take precedence.

Turn On Subject-Level TTS for Your District

Subject-level TTS must be turned on for your district before subject filtering applies. Ask your district administrator to contact Pear Assessment Support to turn on the feature. Once the feature is enabled, configure each student’s TTS subjects using your rostering source or the manual steps below. If subject-level TTS is not enabled for the district, students with TTS turned on continue to receive it across all subjects when the assignment uses student-level accommodations.

Choose Your Setup Method

Use the setup method that matches how your district manages student data. The property name is ttsSubjects across the rostering integrations. The prefix depends on the source.
  • OneRoster CSV: metadata.ttsSubjects column in accommodations.csv.
  • Clever: ext.ttsSubjects field on student users.
  • ClassLink: metadata.ttsSubjects field on student users, with field sharing enabled.
  • Manually in Pear Assessment: Subjects TTS Applies to in the student’s accommodation settings.

Provision Through OneRoster CSV

  1. Open your district’s accommodations.csv file.
  2. Add a column named exactly metadata.ttsSubjects.
  3. Enter each student’s TTS subjects using the supported names listed in Review Subject-Value Requirements for Rostering Data.
  4. Separate multiple subjects with commas. When editing raw CSV, enclose a value containing commas in double quotation marks.
  5. Ensure the student’s existing TTS accommodation is also on.
  6. Submit the updated accommodations file through your existing OneRoster workflow.
  7. After processing, open the student’s accommodation settings in Pear Assessment and verify the saved subjects.

Add this column to your existing accommodations file. This example is not a complete upload template.

Configure Clever

Add the ttsSubjects property to student users in Clever. Clever extension fields use the ext. prefix, so enter the field name as ext.ttsSubjects.
  1. Have your district’s rostering administrator add ext.ttsSubjects to the student user data shared with Pear Assessment.
  2. Populate the field with a comma-separated list of supported subject names. Clever student extension field configuration for subject-level TTS
  3. Ensure the student’s existing TTS accommodation is on.
  4. Sync the updated student data through your existing Clever integration.
  5. Open the student’s accommodation settings in Pear Assessment and verify the saved subjects.
Example field: ext.ttsSubjects Example value: ELA, Mathematics Add metadata.ttsSubjects to student users in ClassLink and enable sharing for the new metadata field.
  1. Have your district’s rostering administrator add metadata.ttsSubjects to the student user data.
  2. Populate the field with a comma-separated list of supported subject names.
  3. In ClassLink’s shared field settings, enable sharing of the new metadata.ttsSubjects field with Pear Assessment. ClassLink shared field settings for subject-level TTS
  4. Ensure the student’s existing TTS accommodation is on.
  5. Sync the updated student data through your existing ClassLink integration.
  6. Open the student’s accommodation settings in Pear Assessment and verify the saved subjects.
Example field: metadata.ttsSubjects Example value: Science, Computer Science
Adding the metadata field alone is not enough. The administrator must also enable it in ClassLink’s shared field settings so the value is shared with Pear Assessment.

Edit Accommodations in Pear Assessment

Authorized administrators and teachers can configure the same settings directly in Pear Assessment.
  1. From Manage Class or Manage District, open the window to add or edit a student user.
  2. Open Configure Accommodations.
  3. Turn on the student’s TTS accommodation. TTS accommodation and subject selections in the Add Student window
  4. Find Subjects TTS Applies to, directly below the TTS dropdown.
  5. Select one or more subjects, or leave All Subjects selected. The UI label Other Subjects corresponds to the roster-feed value Other. Both refer to the same subject.
  6. Save your changes.
  7. Reopen the student’s accommodations and verify the saved subjects.
Teacher access follows the district’s existing accommodation-editing permissions. If teachers cannot edit accommodations, an authorized administrator must make the change.

Review Subject-Value Requirements for Rostering Data

Use the following subject names exactly as written:
  • Mathematics
  • Science
  • ELA
  • Social Studies
  • Other
  • Computer Science
Separate multiple subjects with commas. Example: Mathematics, Science, Computer Science The rostering parser handles values as follows:
  • Supported subject names: Saves the selected subjects.
  • Different capitalization or surrounding spaces: Matches without regard to case and trims spaces.
  • Duplicate subjects: Saves each subject only once.
  • Unknown subject names: Drops those entries without failing the sync.
  • An explicitly empty value: Clears the saved subject list, meaning All Subjects.
  • A missing field: Leaves the student’s existing subject list unchanged.
For rostering feeds, use Other. The Pear Assessment UI displays the same subject as Other Subjects. Other Subjects is a UI label, not an accepted roster-feed value.
If an update contains only unrecognized subject names, no valid subjects remain, which means All Subjects. Verify the saved values after provisioning.

Check How Subject Matching Works

When subject-level TTS is enabled for the district and the assignment uses Enable at Student level:
  • The student’s TTS accommodation must be on.
  • The test must share at least one subject with the student’s selected TTS subjects.
  • An empty subject list or All Subjects allows TTS across all subjects.
Matching uses the test’s subject, not the class’s subject. Assignment-level and class-level overrides take precedence. Enable All enables TTS for everyone, while Disable All disables it rather than using individual student selections.

Troubleshoot Subject-Level TTS

Restore TTS on an Expected Test

Check that the student’s TTS accommodation is on, the assignment uses Enable at Student level, and the test shares a subject with the student’s selected subjects. Also check for assignment-level or class-level overrides that disable TTS.

Find Why TTS Is Available Across All Subjects

Confirm that subject-level TTS has been enabled for the district. If it has, check whether the student’s subject list is empty or set to All Subjects, or an assignment or class overrides student-level settings. Unrecognized rostering values can also leave no valid subject selections, resulting in All Subjects.

Check Subjects After a Roster Update

Confirm that the update includes the correct field:
  • OneRoster: metadata.ttsSubjects in accommodations.csv.
  • Clever: ext.ttsSubjects on student users.
  • ClassLink: metadata.ttsSubjects on student users, with sharing enabled in ClassLink’s shared field settings.

Resolve Teacher Editing Restrictions

Ask an authorized administrator to update the student’s accommodations or review the district’s teacher accommodation-editing permissions.
