Status Terms and Definitions
Assessments have four primary statuses:- Not Started: The student has not opened the assessment because they do not have access to it yet.
- In Progress: The student has accessed the assessment but has not submitted it.
- Submitted: The assessment includes at least one manually graded question that has not yet been scored.
- Graded: All questions for the student have been scored. A student can be marked as graded without answering a question, as long as they accessed the test at least once and the testing window is closed.
- Absent: The student did not access the assessment before the window closed. Students can also be manually marked as absent.
- Paused: A teacher or administrator has temporarily removed the student’s access to the assessment.
- Redirected: The student has been given another attempt on the test.
Bulk Management Actions
Bulk management actions are available after you click on an assessment and select the checkbox for at least one class. These actions are a significant time-saver when managing multiple classes at once.- Open: Opens selected assessments that are not yet open.
- Pause: Temporarily removes a class’s access to the assessment. Use this to keep students off a test without closing the window. You can also pause individual students from the LCB.
- Close: Closes the testing window for selected classes when the test is set to close manually. Only close early if all students who are expected to submit have done so. Closing marks any remaining non-submitters as absent, which records as 0% in reports. For better data, unassign students who will not be taking the test rather than closing early.
- Mark as Done: Required only if you selected Manually Mark as Done when setting up the assessment.
- Release Scores and Feedback: Show or hide scores for students in bulk. Use this to control what students see at different stages: for example, show only an overall score before a retake, then reveal correct answers and response choices after. See Security for Common Assessments: How and When to Release Scores and Feedback.
- Download Grades: Download overall and per-question scoring for all selected classes and students.
- Download Responses: Download response-level data, such as multiple choice selections, for each student and question.
- Bulk Unassign: Remove the assessment from selected classes. Only unassign when there is no valid student data, because this action permanently deletes it. Use this to remove accidental assignments or to exclude classes that could not take the test. See Bulk Unassign.
Manage Classes and Students Individually
The following actions apply at the class level:- Open: Open a class manually.
- Pause / Resume: Pausing temporarily removes a class’s access, which is useful at the end of a period, during an emergency drill, or any time you need to hold students. The Resume button appears once a class is paused. Click it when you are ready to restore access.
- Close: Close the testing window before the scheduled end, or close a class set to Close Manually. Only use this when all expected submissions are in. If some students still need to submit, pause the assessment instead.
- Blank: If no action options appear, the assessment is closed. Only a redirect can reopen access for individual students at this point.
- Redirect: Reopens the assessment for any student not currently In Progress. Use redirect for absent students, students who performed poorly, or students who skipped questions. Each redirect counts as a new attempt. See Use Redirect.
- Mark as Submitted: Closes the test for an individual student to lock in their current answers, or to allow you to manually enter their answers and scores.
- Restrict Access (Mark as Absent): Removes a student’s access before they attempt the assessment. In most cases, pausing is preferable because you can unpause quickly. If you mark a student as absent, redirecting them later will show Attempt 1 as Absent and Attempt 2 as the new attempt. See Restrict Access to Absent Students.
- Add Students: Add students who were not originally assigned the assessment. Students already assigned appear grayed out.
- Unassign Student: Remove the assessment from an individual student. Only use this when there is no valid data, because it permanently deletes the student’s responses. This is the right option for students who will not take the test due to accidental assignment, unenrollment, or no planned retake. A student who does not access the test and is not unassigned will appear in reports with 0%.
- Pause / Resume Student: Temporarily restrict access for a specific student: for example, if they need to leave early, use the restroom, or are called to the office. Click Resume when they are ready to continue.
Manage Student Statuses
Understanding what each student status requires helps you respond quickly during a live assessment. The overall status in the top left of the LCB reflects the class’s progress and access. For example, Not Open means no students have had access yet. In Grading means the test needs to be marked as done or a student has not yet been graded. Graded (submitted): The student submitted the test and all questions are scored. From here, you can use redirect for a retake, manually score, or provide feedback. Graded (skipped questions): The student was graded without completing all questions. If the student will not make up the test, unassign them to remove the non-attempt from your reports. If they will make up the test, redirect them for a retake. Absent: The student did not access the assessment before the window closed. If they will not make up the test, unassign them to remove the non-attempt from reports. If they will make it up, redirect them. See Bulk Unassign and Use Redirect. In Progress: The student is actively taking or has started the test but has not submitted. No action is needed other than reviewing their pace. Redirected: The student was given a redirect, either automatically or manually. A redirect reopens the assessment for absent students, poor test performance, or skipped questions. Each redirect is recorded as a new attempt. Paused: The student’s access has been temporarily removed, either individually or as part of the entire class. Check whether the class-level status is paused or just individual students, then resume as needed. Submitted: The student has submitted but requires manual grading. The progress bar on the student card represents manually graded questions. Click the bar or the corresponding section in the bar graph to navigate directly to that question for grading.Resources
