The Item Metadata Generation feature in Pear Assessment helps educators quickly generate suggested metadata for assessment items using AI. Based on the question text and answer choices, the feature can suggest aligned standards, Depth of Knowledge (DoK), and difficulty level. This feature is currently available as an early access beta for select item types and requires users to configure preferred standards in their profile.

Pear Assessment: Item Metadata Generation (Early Access)

The Item Metadata Generation feature uses AI to suggest metadata for assessment items based on the content of the question and answer choices. This feature is currently in Early Access/Beta and is designed to help educators save time when aligning assessment items to standards.

Important Information About AI and Privacy

Pear Assessment uses AI with data privacy safeguards in place. For metadata generation:
  • Only the question content and relevant standards information are processed.
  • User-identifiable information is not shared outside the application.
  • Data submitted for metadata generation is not used to train AI models.

Supported Item Types

Currently, metadata generation supports the following item types:
  • Multiple Choice (MCQ)
  • Multiple Select (MSQ)
  • True/False
  • Text Entry
  • Essay
Additional item types may be supported in future releases.

Prerequisite: Configure Preferred Standards

To use the Item Metadata Generation feature, users must configure their Preferred Standards in their profile.

Set Preferred Standards

  1. Open your profile in Pear Assessment.
  2. Locate the Preferred Standards settings.
  3. Select:
    • A Standard Set
    • Grade
    • Subject
The metadata suggestions will use these selected standards when generating recommendations.

Generate Metadata for an Item

  1. Create or edit a supported item type.
  2. Enter the question text and answer choices (if applicable).
  3. In the Pear Assist panel on the right side of the authoring view, select the standard sets and click Suggest Metadata.
  4. Pear Assessment analyzes the item content and suggests:
    • A matching standard
    • Depth of Knowledge (DoK)
    • Difficulty level

Review and Save Suggestions

After metadata is generated, the suggestions appear in the Pear Assist panel for review.

Review Suggestions

Carefully review the suggested:
  • Standard alignment
  • Depth of Knowledge (DoK)
  • Difficulty level

Save Suggestions

Click Save Suggestions and Item to save the assessment item and the generated metadata in a single action.

When No Metadata Is Suggested

If no metadata is generated, the item content may not clearly align with the selected preferred standards. Try:
  • Adding more detailed question text
  • Verifying the preferred standards configuration
  • Confirming the item type is supported

Current Limitations

At this time, the feature cannot interpret content from images included in:
  • Question prompts
  • Answer choices
Only text-based content is analyzed during metadata generation.
Image context support is planned for a future update.

Beta Feedback and Support

This feature is currently in beta, and feedback is encouraged as functionality continues to improve. To report issues or share feedback, please contact the Pear Assessment Support Team.
