Use a test student account to verify your GoGuardian Teacher setup and demonstrate the student experience without using a real student’s account. This article covers creating the account in Google Admin Console, adding it to a GoGuardian Teacher classroom, and starting a test session on a managed Chromebook.

Review Requirements

You’ll need:
  • A Google administrator with permission to create users.
  • A teacher account with GoGuardian Teacher access.
  • A managed Chromebook for the test student.
  • A student organizational unit (OU) with both the GoGuardian and GoGuardian License extensions deployed.
Place the test account in the same OU as the students whose experience you want to test. See Install GoGuardian Extensions and Configure Google Admin Console for deployment requirements.
Use a separate device for the teacher view. Give the test account a clearly identifiable name, use sample content only, and store its credentials securely.

Create the Test Student Account

These steps require a Google administrator with user-management permissions. For Google’s instructions, see Add an account for a new user.
  1. Sign in to Google Admin Console.
  2. Go to Directory > Users.
  3. Select Add new user.
  4. Enter the account information. Use a name and email address that identify it as a test account. For example: Replace your-school-domain with your school’s managed student domain.
  5. Expand Manage user’s password, organizational unit, and profile photo.
  6. Under Organizational unit, select the student OU whose setup you want to test.
  7. Choose a password option that meets your school’s security requirements.
  8. Select Add New User.
  9. Save or share the sign-in details through your school’s approved secure channel.
Both GoGuardian extensions must be deployed to the test account’s OU. If either extension is missing, ask your administrator to verify deployment before continuing.

Sign In as the Test Student

  1. On the test Chromebook, sign out of any existing account.
  2. Sign in with the test student’s email address and password. Complete any first-sign-in prompts.
  3. Open Chrome and enter chrome://extensions in the address bar.
  4. Confirm that both GoGuardian and GoGuardian License are installed and enabled.
Keep the test student signed in while you complete the remaining steps. For more information, see Verify Extension Deployment.

Add the Test Student to a Classroom

These steps require a teacher account with GoGuardian Teacher access. For demonstrations, use a dedicated test classroom rather than a class with real students.

Create a Test Classroom

  1. On the teacher’s device, sign in to GoGuardian Teacher.
  2. On the Active Classrooms page, select Add Classroom.
  3. Enter a classroom name, such as GoGuardian Teacher Test.
  4. Select Add Classroom to save.
For more options, see Create a Classroom.

Add the Test Account by Email

  1. Open the test classroom.
  2. Select the Students tab.
  3. Select Add Students, then Add emails.
  4. Enter the test student’s full school email address.
  5. Select Add Students.

Update a Synced Roster

How you add the account depends on the classroom’s roster source:
  • Google Classroom: Add the test account to the roster in Google Classroom. In GoGuardian Teacher, open the classroom’s Students tab and select Sync Students From Google.
  • Clever or ClassLink: Ask your administrator to update the roster at its source and sync the change. Students cannot be added manually to these integrated classes in GoGuardian Teacher.
See Add Students to a Class for more enrollment options.

Start a Test Session

  1. On the test Chromebook, open a school-approved webpage.
  2. On the teacher’s device, find the test classroom in GoGuardian Teacher.
  3. Choose a session length.
  4. Select Start Class.
  5. Confirm that the test student appears in the Screens view with their active tab visible.
When the active tab appears, the test account is connected to the session. You can now use the account for your demonstration. See Start a Classroom Session for session controls.

Troubleshoot Device Unavailable

If the test student shows Device Unavailable:
  1. Confirm that the Chromebook is signed in with the same test student email address you added to the classroom.
  2. Check chrome://extensions to confirm that both GoGuardian extensions are installed and enabled.
  3. Restart the Chromebook and sign in again.
  4. If the issue continues, ask IT to review extension deployment, GoGuardian Teacher IP restrictions, and firewall settings.
If you test on a Mac or Windows computer, sign in to the Chrome browser with the test student account. Signing in to a Google website alone is not sufficient.
For more troubleshooting steps, see Device Unavailable.

Finish Testing

  1. In GoGuardian Teacher, select End Session.
  2. Sign out of the test student account on the Chromebook.
  3. Store the credentials securely if you plan to reuse the account. If you no longer need it, ask your Google administrator to retire it according to your school’s account-retention policy.
