Pear Assessment can be configured to roster classes in many ways. The right method depends on what systems are already in place and whether a teacher or an administrator controls the roster updates. See the table below for more information about each option.
Recommend a synced method whenever your district’s systems support it. Teacher-Created Rosters and manual CSV uploads require the most day-to-day maintenance and are the most error-prone at scale. If your district uses Clever, ClassLink, Canvas, Schoology, or Google Classroom, prefer that sync over self-rostering.

Compare Rostering Methods

Use this table to narrow down the right method for your situation.
Google Classroom sync can run on top of Clever — it is not an either/or choice. A district can sync rosters from Clever and still let teachers share assignments through Google Classroom.

Manage Rosters as a Teacher

Teacher-managed methods work well for individual classrooms that don’t rely on a district-wide sync.
  • Google Classroom Sync: Connect a class to Google Classroom so enrollment and assignments stay in sync automatically. See Create Classes and Add Students.
  • Teacher-Created Rosters: Paste in a list of students by email or name. Pear Assessment automatically enables single sign-on (SSO) for students with Google or Microsoft 365 accounts. If you don’t have a Pear Assessment account yet, see Create a Free Teacher Account first, then Create Classes and Add Students.

Sync Rosters from Your District’s Systems

District-managed methods give administrators control over roster accuracy at scale, but they take longer to set up and reduce a teacher’s ability to make ad hoc roster changes. Before setting any of these up for the first time, see Configure District Access for Pear Assessment.
  • Clever Sync: Sync with your district’s student information system (SIS) nightly. Rosters update automatically, but teachers have less flexibility to correct errors that originate in the SIS. See Use Clever Sync with Pear Assessment and Integration with Clever.
  • ClassLink Sync: Sync with your district’s SIS through ClassLink, similar to Clever Sync.
  • Canvas Integration: District IT connects Pear Assessment to Canvas using an API key. Rosters update automatically based on course enrollment, and students access assignments and grades without a separate sign-in. See Set Up Canvas Integration.
  • Schoology Integration: Connect Pear Assessment to Schoology for single sign-on, roster sync, assignment sync, and grade sync. See Schoology Integration.
  • CSV Roster Upload: Customer Support can help initiate the process for uploading your district’s roster, if this wasn’t discussed in an onboarding call already.
