Teachers can use the Merge Classrooms feature to combine 2 or more existing classes and class rosters into a newly created, merged class. When classrooms are merged, the original classes remain intact and available under the Classrooms Currently Merged section. Merged classrooms are identifiable by the Merged icon on the classroom tile. Hovering over this icon lists which classes are included in the merged class.

Merge Classrooms

  1. Go to the Classrooms tab in GoGuardian Teacher and click Merge Classrooms.
  2. Select the checkbox next to each class you’d like to merge, then click Next.
A maximum of 5 total classes can be merged at one time.
  3. Enter a name for the merged classroom and an optional description, then click Next.
  4. Select which source classroom’s settings to apply to the newly created merged class. Settings include class calendar schedule, Default Scene, Classroom Icon, Classroom Tile Color, and the Session Report Email setting (enabled or disabled).
You can change any of these settings for the merged classroom later.
  5. On the Merge Classrooms page, review the Review Details information, then click Create Merged Classroom to finalize the merger.

Unmerge Classrooms

To unmerge a classroom, delete the merged class. Click the Settings cogwheel on the merged class tile, then select Delete and Unmerge Class from the dropdown. Enter Delete on the confirmation page to confirm. Deleting the merged classroom preserves all original classes and moves them back to the Active section of Teacher.

FAQ

How many classes can I merge? Up to 5 total classes can be included in a merged classroom. This can include any combination of manually created classes, Google Classroom classes, and integrated classes from Clever, ClassLink, or OneRoster. How many students can be in a merged classroom? 115 total students is the maximum roster cap across all merged classes. If a merged classroom contains a synced class from Google or a student information system, will the information sync? Yes. The original classrooms continue to sync with their source, and subsequent syncs update the merged classroom’s roster. Can I add a student to the merged classroom? It depends. If the merged classroom contains a manual classroom, you can add or remove students directly from the merged classroom, which also updates the original classroom. If the merged classroom sources data from an integrated classroom, you must make changes directly from the source. Can I add a teacher to the merged classroom? Yes. Co-teachers can be added directly to merged classrooms regardless of the source type.
Only users with the Owner role can add co-teachers.
How do roles and permissions apply to merged classrooms? Users maintain their highest role from the individual classrooms in the merged classroom. For example, if a user is a Teacher in Class 1 and a Helper in Class 2, they’ll be assigned the Teacher role in the merged classroom. Can users with a Helper role merge a classroom? Yes. Helpers can merge classrooms, but they can’t add or remove students. How will scenes work with a merged classroom? You can select which classroom’s settings to apply to the new merged classroom, including default scenes. Scenes applied during a merged classroom session work the same as in any regular classroom session. Can I unmerge a classroom? Yes. You can archive or delete a merged classroom. The original individual classrooms are retained. When I archive or delete a merged classroom, will it delete the original individual classrooms? No. Only the merged classroom is deleted or archived. You’ll need to delete individual classes separately. Can I delete an individual classroom and keep the merged classroom? No. Individual classrooms must be maintained to source data for merged classrooms. Will student browsing data from the original classrooms carry over to the merged classroom? No. Because the merged classroom is a new classroom, previous historical data must be accessed from the individual classrooms. Any new browsing data collected from a merged classroom session is stored separately under the new classroom. Will students be automatically grouped into their individual classes when I start a session from a merged classroom? No. While the grouping is automatically created, you’ll need to go to Student Groups to turn this feature on. If a student belongs to 2 classes I’m merging, will they show up twice? No. Duplicates are removed automatically.
